USAir discounts fares for Thanksgiving week

September 21, 1991|By John H. Gormley Jr.

USAir announced yesterday a program of discount fares to encourage more travel during the less busy days of Thanksgiving week.

Many of the discount airline fares usually available during the rest of the year are not available at Thanksgiving. Even though Thanksgiving is one of the peak travel periods of the year, there are several days in the week when relatively few people travel. The fares are designed to boost traffic during those low-traffic days.

The new fares require passengers to begin their trips Sunday or Monday, Nov. 24 or 25, or Thursday or Friday, Nov. 28 or 29, and return on Friday or Saturday, Nov. 29 or 30. Reservations must be made seven days in advance of travel and tickets purchased within 24 hours of making the reservation.

Under the fare program, a round-trip ticket between Miami and ** Baltimore could be purchased for $298, compared with $608 before the discounts went into effect. The fare to Los Angeles would be $468, compared with $1,190.

Larry D. Swerdlin, an owner of the Burton Travel agency, said that he expected the fares to have broad appeal.
