Construction is to begin next week on an expanded left turn lane from north bound Route 3 to Waugh Chapel Road near Crofton Village.
The $91,000 project is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. Bituminous Construction Inc. of Baltimore will do the the work.
There is a single left turn lane at the location, but Edward Meehan, district engineer for the State Highway Administration, said it is not enough to handle the traffic.
"It queues up pretty bad during the peak hours," Meehan said.
The project also will include improved signals at the intersection.
Many commuters use Waugh Chapel Road to bypass Route 175 to get to Odenton and Fort Meade.
All lanes at the intersection will be open 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m.
The additional lane will be made by cutting into the median.
Meehan said engineers will be on the site today but construction will probably not start until next week.
