Navy beats Howard after 11 years, 2-1

ANNAPOLIS -- Navy scored twice in the last two minutes of the half and went on to thwart visiting Howard University in soccer last night, 2-1.

In passing a strong early-season test, the Midshipmen raised their record to 5-0, best start since the 1974 team went 5-0. The win was Navy's first over Howard since 1980, and its first home decision over the Bison since 1963. Mike Taylor and Cliff Carpenter got the Midshipmen's goals, and Jamal Skinner scored for the visitors with nine minutes left.

UMBC 2, Brooklyn 1

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The University of Maryland Baltimore County (2-1-1, 1-0-1) scored once in each half on goals by Jason Dieter and Rob Wagner to defeat Brooklyn College (1-3, 0-1) in East Coast Conference action. Brooklyn, a first-year member of the ECC, is playing under a two-year postseason suspension by the NCAA and the ECC for unsportsmanlike conduct toward game officials after last year's first-round NCAA tournament loss to Adelphi.

Towson State (4-0-1) built a 3-0 lead in a 13-minute span midway through the second half against the University of Delaware (0-4-0), as Mark Sullivan, Brian Bichy and Ed McCue scored against their former ECC rival.

EMMITSBURG -- Brendan Callahan and Ryan Ray scored 14 seconds apart midway through the first half to lead Mount St. Mary's (2-2-1) in a rain-shortened game. It was called with 37 minutes, 41 seconds left and was ruled an official contest by the referee. Mount St. Mary's had taken an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by junior Joe Kelly. An electrical storm delayed the start of the second half by 20 minutes.

Frostburg 2, Gettysburg 1

FROSTBURG -- Bryan Morris' goal off a feed from Mark Urban with 12 minutes left in the game lifted Frostburg State (5-0) past Gettysburg (3-3). Derek Woodward (Calvert Hall) had registered the Bobcats' tying goal with five minutes remaining in the half. Goalkeeper Pete Tytus (Bel Air) had five saves for Frostburg State.
