Manor Care Inc.

Manor Care Inc., a Silver Spring-based hotel and nursing home company, posted a 27 percent gain in quarterly earnings per share as its acquisition of the Econo Lodge franchise chain gave revenues a boost.

Stewart Bainum Jr., the company's chief executive, said Manor Care's health-care segment showed a 14 percent increase in revenues for the first quarter, which ended Aug. 31. Lodging revenues were up 21 percent with most of the gain the result of the addition of Econo Lodge.

Without Econo Lodge, Manor Care's lodging units would have posted a slight revenue gain for the quarter, said Tracy A. Munn, the company's investor relations manager. Ms. Munn said, "Business has picked up on the lodging side" since a slump set off by the Persian Gulf war, but she added that this segment had not fully recovered.

Monarch Avalon Inc.

This Baltimore-based printer and maker of games continued its recovery this summer, posting its third straight profitable quarter for the three months that ended July 31.

Monarch, maker of complex board games such as "Gulf Strike", ended its last fiscal year, which closed April 30, in the black, the first annual profit in six years.

Jackson Dott, Monarch's president, said that the company's first fiscal quarter is usually its worst but that game sales were strong enough to keep the company profitable this summer.

Mr. Dott attributed the improvement to the company's monthly release of new war games and more emphasis on easier introductory games.

"Games often excel in a recession," he added.
