Boot Pointers

September 18, 1991|By Chicago Tribune

The great fashion debate over long and short has spread to fall boots.

One thing is for sure: Extreme is "in." Both tall over-the-knee and short ankle styles are looking hot for the cool weather ahead, eclipsing the equestrian craze of past seasons -- which saw boots hitting mid-calf.

Don't let the new boot heights intimidate you. Do be daring and try one that's different for you. Here are a few tips that will boost your confidence and help you put together a stylish look.

* Don't wear short boots if you have heavy calves. But virtually anyone can wear over-the-knee boots.

* Do wear colored hosiery or legging rather than nude hose with any kind of boot. "It's more of a psychological thing, but seeing bare skin with boots looks cold," says Marcia Barrett, director of fashion presentation at Neiman Marcus.

* Do wear over-the-knee boots with short skirts or leggings. Wearing them with a midcalf-length skirt defeats the purpose of buying an over-the-knee boot.

* Don't wear heavy heels if you are short. Taller women look better in chunky heels.
