A sure sign of being in step with the new fall style is to wear
black fishnet hose. The problem is finding them. This racy bit of 1960s redux has taken off like a thoroughbred out of the starting gate. Most stores have already been cleaned out.
Yet all is not lost. Bergdorf Goodman, which sold 1,200 pairs in a week, once again has in stock a DKNY style that costs $10.50 a pair. This is one of the more comfortable versions; the mesh pattern is laid over a sheer, colorless, stocking-knit base. This is helpful at the end of the day, when fishnet can make the soles of the feet feel like they have been walking on a charcoal grill.
Danskin solves this problem by putting a solid black sole on its tights. The Danskin version is $20 a pair.
Here are a few suggestions for those who wear these provocative hose. They look best with an all-black ensemble, but watch out if the fishnets have back seams and the plan is to wear them with a black leather biker jacket, stretch miniskirt and ankle-strap sandals. Wrong message here.
Instead try them with a snappy Claude Montana outfit or a Chanel-like suit and high-heel pumps. Then the signals are all style.
* MTV's "House of Style" does the plaid thing and the motorcycle thing tonight at 10. But the segment on Cindy Crawford being photographed by Helmut Newton is guaranteed strangeness, especially coming on the same show with a piece on how to decorate your dorm room.
