A 29-year-old northeast Baltimore man was scheduled to appear in District Court today on charges that he attempted to kidnap a 3-year-old boy from a playground at the Parkside Garden Apartments, police said.

The accused, Bruce Green of the 3900 block of Dudley Ave., was arrested Saturday evening and charged with attempted kidnapping and assault.

Since his arrest, Green has been held at the Eastern District lockup in lieu of $7,000 bail, pending a bail review hearing today at the Eastside District Court.

Police said the 3-year-old, whose name was not released, was playing with several other children at the playground about 6 p.m. Saturday when a man approached and began pulling him away from the other children and toward Sinclair Lane.

Police said the child's 6-year-old sister witnessed the incident and ran home to tell her mother.

The mother, Felicia Smith, left her home and ran to the playground, where she saw a man dragging her son away, police said.

Police said Smith, her husband and another man managed to wrestle the man to the ground and rescue the child.

Held on the ground by Smith's husband and the other man, the would-be abductor was arrested a few minutes later by police.

Police said Green was arrested and taken to Church Hospital, where he was treated for minor lacerations and released.

Police said Smith's son sustained bruises and scratches, but did not require medical treatment.

Investigators said they had no motive for the attempted kidnapping.
