Demetrios J. Coventaros, 103, restaurateur

September 16, 1991

Demetrios J. "Harry" Coventaros, former owner of the Cove Restaurant, died Thursday at Meridian Nursing Center-Catonsville after a short illness. His death came just a few hours after he had reached his 103rd birthday.

Funeral services were being held today at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2504 Cub Hill Road.

Mr. Coventaros, a lifelong bachelor, had lived in Ferndale for 40 years and in Baltimore before that.

A native of Greece, Mr. Coventaros immigrated to the United States in 1908 to join his brother, Constantine, who had traveled to Baltimore a year earlier.

He and his brother ran the Cove Restaurant at Franklin Street and Park Avenue, a well-known gathering spot. In 1964, they sold the business and retired. His brother returned to Greece, where he died. The Cove's new owner ran the restaurant for about 10 more years.

Mr. Coventaros was active in the Greek Orthodox Church at both the Cathedral of the Annunciation downtown and at St. Demetrios. He helped pay for the education of young men and women both in his birthplace, Kozani, Greece, and in the United States.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews in Greece, whom he visited several times.
