Linda Frey and Liane Shih, seniors at Bel Air High School, have beennamed semifinalists in the 1992 National Merit Scholarship program.

The students scored in the top 1 percent of all students in Maryland who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test in the fall of 1990. They must now advance to the finalist level in order to be considered for merit scholarships, which will be awarded in the spring.

To qualify as a finalist, the students must have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, submit SAT scores that confirm PSAT/NMSQT performance, and complete adetailed scholarship application that includes a self-description and information about scholastic achievements, school and community activities, and educational plans and goals.

About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to become finalists, and all merit scholarship winners will be chosen from the group of finalists. The selection of award recipients will be based on candidates' abilities, accomplishments, and personal qualities that are considered important for success in college studies.

Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Frey, of Bel Air, and Liane is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. TonyShih, also of Bel Air.
