Tom Kennedy, a defensive lineman for Lebanon Valley, blocked an extra-point attempt by Johns Hopkins' Marzio Trotta with 26 seconds left to preserve a 19-19 tie at Homewood Field last night.
Trotta had another chance to win it 22 seconds later, as the Blue Jays moved to the Flying Dutchmen's 23-yard line after a pass interception. However, the senior's 40-yard field-goal try was short and wide left.
Although he had missed on one of two earlier conversion attempts, the distance was not out of Trotta's range, as he had a career-best of 39 yards last year.
It was the first game of the season for both teams. The tie enabled second-year Johns Hopkins coach Jim Margraff to keep a non-losing home record intact at 4-0-2.
Hopkins crammed most of its excitement into the last 2 minutes, 52 seconds, driving 87 yards for the tying touchdown when quarterback John Guglielmo passed to Lou Angelos in the end zone.
After the kickoff, a pass by Lebanon Valley quarterback Bob Schwenk was deflected by Hopkins' Eric Williams into the arms of teammate Tommy Day at midfield.
A pass from Guglielmo to wide receiver Joe Richards at the 23 set the stage for the field-goal attempt.
Lebanon Valley controlled much of the game on the ground, rushing for 240 yards. Hopkins did most of its damage through the air. Guglielmo, a 6-foot junior, finished with 21-for-39 for 264 yards and one interception.
Jelani Rucker (Poly) led the Hopkins' linemen in tackles with 11. Linebackers Stu Markley and Ed Lineen combined for 28 stops.
"They play the run tough, so we thought we'd have to pass on them," Margraff said. "We were hoping to force them to pass, but their offensive line did a good job of opening holes for the run."
Two penalties against Lebanon Valley stalled an offensive drive and kept a Hopkins drive in gear in the first half.
A 24-yard punt return by Eric Stouch put the visitors on the Hopkins 16 halfway through the first period, and three successive carries by Corey Thomas put the ball on the 3. A delay-of-game penalty set the offense back to the 8, and three plays later Doug Zook kicked a 25-yard field goal.
Pinned inside its 36 for its first three series, Hopkins got a drive going late in the quarter. A third-down pass from Guglielmo to Richards produced a first down at the Lebanon Valley 41.
