Lebanon Valley blocked an extra point attempt by Johns Hopkins' Marzio Trotta with 26 seconds left to preserve a 19-19 tie at Homewood Field last night.

Trotta had another chance to win it 22 seconds later, as the Blue Jays moved to the Flying Dutchmen's 23-yard line following a pass interception. However, the senior's attempted 40-yard field goal try was short and off to the left.

Hopkins crammed most of its excitement into the last 2 minutes, 52 seconds, driving 87 yards for the tying touchdown when quarterback John Guglielmo passed to Lou Angelos in the end zone.

Following the kickoff, a pass by Lebanon Valley quarterback Bob Schwenk was deflected by Hopkins' Eric Williams into the arms of teammate Tommy Day at midfield.

A Guglielmo pass to wide reciever Joe Richards at the 23 set the stage for the field goal attempt.

Two penalties against Lebanon Valley stalled an offensive drive and kept a Hopkins drive in gear in the first half.

A 24-yard punt return by Eric Stouch put the visitors on the Hopkins 16 halfway through the first period, and three successive carries by Corey Thomas put the ball on the 3. A delay of game penalty set the offense back to the 8, and three plays later Doug Zook kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Pinned inside its own 36 for its first three series, Hopkins got a drive going late in the quarter. A third-down pass from John Guglielmo to Joe Richards produced a first down at the Lebanon Valley 41

Lou Angelos opened the second quarter with a 15-yard run, but the drive seemingly stalled when Hopkins came up short on fourth-and-6 at the Lebanon Valley 21. The Flying Dutchmen were called for offsides, however, and Paul Ferreri leaped for a first down at the 15.

From there, Guglielmo lofted a pass to the back of the end zone. The ball was tipped by defender Wes Gelb, and caught by wide receiver Mike Hollenbeck. The attempted conversion was no good.

Lebanon Valley responded by driving 61 yards in seven plays. Quarterback Bob Schwenk swept right end untouched for the last three yards. The big play was a 24-yard Schwenk-to-Chad Rarig pass to Hopkins' 17.

An interception by Ty Wilhide at his own 14 stopped the next Hopkins march, and Lebanon Valley came back with a 76-yard drive in the closing two minutes of the half.

On fourth down from the Blue Jays' 10, Zook attempted a 27-yard field goal. It was blocked by sophomore back Tommy Spain, but Zook recovered the ball, rolled out to his right and threw a pass to tight end Darin Heilman at the goal line, who went over a defender to make the catch and come down in the end zone.

Hopkins got the only score of the third quarter, moving 85 yards in 15 plays. Richards make a great lunge to catch a Guglielmo pass at the Lebanon Valley 4, and on second down, Ferreri barged into the end zone. Marzio Trotta's extra point drew the Blue Jays within 16-13 with two minutes left.

Four minutes later, Zook's 23-yard field goal lifted the margin to 19-13.
