Navy's soccer team made its Patriot League debut a successful one, downing league foe Lafayette, 2-1.
The game marked the debut of freshman goalie Doug Williams, who made nine saves, including one on a penalty kick.
Offensively, senior T. R. Buchanan scored the first goal of the season, and the first of his career, 9 minutes and 30 seconds into thegame. He was assisted by junior Cliff Carpenter. At the 53-minute mark, junior Jono Halverson scored off a pass from sophomore Jeff Wagner.
Navy will travel Saturday to the Blue Ridge Tournament in Emmitsburg for a 1:30 p.m. matchup with Shippensburg.
NICOLAO SCORES 10 GOALS
Navy's water polo team traveled to the Triton Invitational at the University of California at San Diego last week and recorded two first-day wins over UC-Davis, 12-6, and Claremont-Mudd, 15-4.
Teamcaptain Luis Nicolao, a third-team All-American last year, exploded for 10 goals on the day -- five in each game.
In game one, Brian Wineke and Rebel Cobb had two goals apiece. In the second game, it wasJerry Berman and Josh Bell who chipped in with two goals each.
John McCullough had 17 saves on the day.
Nicolao is closing in on Tom Popp's academy record for points in a career. Popp recorded 337 points as a Mid, while Nicolao's career total is 273 after his 10-goal performance.
WOMEN 4TH IN TOURNEY
The women's volleyball team captured fourth in Navy's own Trident Invitational.
The Mids opened with wins over Patriot League foe Bucknell, 3-1 (12-15, 15-9, 15-10, 15-2) and Delaware, 3-0 (15-6, 15-8, 15-6).
On Saturday, Navy got offto a slow start, losing to eventual-champion Northeastern in three straight, 8-15, 10-15, 7-15, and Virginia Commonwealth, 1-3 (12-15, 15-6, 11-15, 10-15). The tournament closed out with the hosts falling to University of Maryland Baltimore County, 3-0 (8-15, 9-15, 10-15).
Katie Schullian leads the team with a .427 hitting percentage. Schullian recorded 37 kills, 17 block solos and 11 block assists in her first collegiate tournament.
Team captain Stephanie Dixon had 57 kills. Laura Hatcher leads the team with 36 blocks (2.12 per game), andRachelle Smith has amassed 128 assists.
The Mids will compete in the George Mason Invitational tomorrow and Saturday, where they will face George Mason at 2 p.m. and Towson at 6 p.m. in tomorrow's first round. Delaware, Hofstra, Princeton and the University of Maryland Baltimore County round out the eight-team field.
