State was right to sponsor race

It's your call

September 11, 1991

Friends of the state and of the horse racing industry proved a tough daily double, combining their voices to say in resounding fashion, yes, the state should have sponsored The State of Maryland Distaff Handicap in yesterday's "It's Your Call" phone survey.

By a 3-to-1 margin, callers said the state was correct in spending the $50,000 needed to sponsor the race in Sunday's Maryland Million. Of an unusually large number of responses (1,127), 74 percent (834) said the state made the right decision. Only 26 percent (293) said the funds could have been better spent elsewhere.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
