Terps to win title in ACC 'finale'

It's your call

September 09, 1991

The University of Maryland will get the thrill of winning the Atlantic Coast Conference football championship for the last year it is up for grabs, according to respondents to this weekend's "It's Your Call."

Last year? What is the ACC going the way of so many other conferences and breaking up?

Hardly. But when the top-ranked team in the nation moves into your neighborhood, as No. 1 Florida State is doing to the ACC next season, it's clear the fight could be for second place for a few years to come.

Which makes this year's race all the more important. Perhaps because of its 17-6 victory over Virginia Saturday, 161 of the 469 callers (34 percent) picked Maryland to win the ACC title this year.

Clemson was second with 20 percent, followed by Georgia Tech (15 percent), North Carolina (9), Duke (6.5), Virginia and Wake (each at 6 percent) and North Carolina State (3 percent).

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as would be done in a scientific public opinion poll.
