1991 Boys Soccer Outlooks

September 08, 1991

Coach: Jim Bracelin, first year

Assistant coaches: Dave Wisner

Last year's record: 1-11 overall, last in the Valley Christian Conference

Top returnees: Senior, forward Jeff Banz; juniors, halfback Tom Harbin, forwards Kevin Ash, fullback Jeff Calafos

Top newcomers: Senior, goalkeeper David Wright, junior Chris Hulver; sophomore, fullback/halfback Eric Hall

Coach's comments: "We're working on fundamentals and the guys are showing a strong desire to learn and improve. It looks like things will gel and we should be able to win more games than we did a year ago."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook:The Patriots struggled last year but first-year coach Jim Bracelin, who replaces Greg Winegar, believes last year's record doesn't indicate the team he has this year. The Pats lost a lot of close games a year ago and Bracelin has gone back to the basics to turn some of thoseclose losses into wins. North Carroll and Liberty (Va.) College graduate Dave Wisner is assisting Bracelin and his knowledge of the game has done wonders. Senior Banz and junior Ash will provide much of thespark offensively. Newcomer Wright, a senior, has looked solid so far in goal with junior Calafos anchoring the defense and providing leadership to a young set of defenders. Bracelin has a problem with overall depth, particularly on defense. That puts a lot of pressure on the goal scorers -- who will need to score two or three goals and maybemore a game to be successful. This team should be good for a couple more wins, but reaching the .500 mark could be tough.
