1991 Field Hockey Outlooks

September 08, 1991

Coach: Marie Wilson, 21st year Assistant coaches: Donna Baker, Catherine Caauwe, Jen Achziger

1990 record: 6-7 overall, Class 1A Region II champion, 1-4 and fourth in the county

Top returnees: Seniors, right wing Wendy Galandak, center midfield Dani Deeds, left halfback Monica Smith, goalie Gail Garber

Top newcomers: Juniors, left midfield Jo Shandrowsky, left wing/left midfield Krissy Kirk; sophomore, left wing Becky Tregoning

Coach's comments: "Last year we did extremely well for what we had. This year we should be a little stronger."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook: Key shocked many observers last year by becoming regional champion despite its less-than-gaudy record. Still, most of the losses were at thehands of the larger Class 3A and 4A schools in the county. That, andKey's history as one of the top Class 1A teams in the state over theyears, means the playoff showing wasn't all that surprising. The Eagles appear short on returning talent this year, and the junior varsity team is coming of an unusually weak season (0-4-1 in the county, 1-6-2 overall). Key likely will struggle against county foes again thisyear, but the Eagles should continue to do well in the regional and state tournaments, given how few Class 1A teams in the state play thesport. The key to the Eagles' future, though, is at the j.v. level; Key could ill afford another weak team at that level.
