COACHES: BOYS — Rob Pennington, first year. GIRLS -- Rick Cook, eighth year

Last year's records: BOYS -- Second in the county, second in the Central Maryland Conference, sixth in state Class 3A. GIRLS -- Third in the county, fourth in the Central Maryland Conference, eighth in state Class 3A

Top returnees: BOYS -- Juniors, Matt Crill, Jeff Gray, Aaron Quidort; sophomore, Shawn Collins. GIRLS -- Seniors, Melanie Phipps, Jen Mullins; juniors, Karrie Murphy, Kathy Marks; sophomores, Karen Hammel, Heather Young

Top newcomers: BOYS -- Freshmen, Jeremy Zasadinski, Mike Kost. GIRLS -- None selected as of Wednesday deadline.

Coaches' comments: BOYS -- "I'm looking for a pretty good season. We're going to be a solid team. We've got a lot of kids with a lot of potential. We have everybody in the top four or five running in the same bunch." GIRLS -- "We have sort have been a team in flux. We need to establish our five six and seven runners. Jen (Mullins) is very determined to have a better year."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook: WithJim Clarius, the boys team was destined for middle of the pack in the county and CMC, at best. Now that he's transferred to Key, it probably will be a long season for the Cavs. GIRLS -- This team will struggle, too, but with four experienced runners back, the Cavs could challenge North Carroll and Key for third in the county. Finding runners for the next three spots in the lineup is the challenge.
