September 08, 1991

A 24-year-old Montgomery County man was killed and two passengers were injured late Friday when his car slammed into a light pole in Wheaton, authorities reported.

Jonathan David Cardwell, the driver, was dead at the scene of the 11:30 p.m. crash. One of the injured, Barry Ira Shapiro, 23, of Olney, was in critical condition yesterday at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.

The force of the impact severed his Chevy Camaro Z-28, police said, adding that the cause of the accident remained under investigation.

Another accident yesterday left a Calvert County couple seriously hurt. Police said Ronald Cullember was driving south on Route 313 with his wife, Linda, when their car was struck near Centreville by a truck driven by William Bontrager, 34, of Worton. Police said their car spun around, traveling 200 feet from the point of impact, and that the use of seat belts prevented the

Cullembers from going through the windshield.

Mr. Bontrager, who refused hospital treatment, was charged with failing to yield the right of way and failure to use a seat belt,

police said.
