Houston Astros -- Purchased the contract of P Chris Gardner from Class AAA Tucson.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Acquired P Steve Wilson (0-0, 4.38 ERA) from the Chicago Cubs on a waiver claim. Sent P Jeff Hartsock (12-6, 3.80 ERA in 29 games) from Class AAA Albuquerque to the Cubs' Class AAA Iowa team. Designated the contract of OF Butch Davis for assignment and must assign his contract off the 40-man roster within 10 days.

Texas Rangers -- Acquired P Hector Fajardo (8-8, 3.48 ERA) from Pittsburgh in completion of the trade that sent IF Steve Buechele to the Pirates.

Basketball Los Angeles Clippers -- Signed free-agent G Clinton Smith (7 points in 5 games with the Washington Bullets last season).

College Big Eight Conference -- Named John Erickson assistant commissioner.

Creighton -- Announced the resignation of AD Dick Myers, effective Oct. 1. Named Thomas Moore AD.

Washington Capitals -- Signed Rod Langway to a 2-year playing contract. Langway will join the team in a yet-to-be-determined position when he retires.
