Although this gourmet food and wine shop has provided the Mount Vernon neighborhood with an assortment of delicious carryout for six years, it seems particularly kind to those of us who consume lots of chicken and turkey.
Morton's Jamaican chicken salad sandwich ($4.50) is prepared with red and green peppers, red onions, lime juice and soy sauce. Just as memorable is the freshly roasted turkey sandwich ($4.75); the store roasts its turkey with Old Bay seasoning. The club sandwich ($6.50) includes turkey, slab bacon and smoked Gouda cheese. A recent daily special, grilled breast of chicken, was marinated in a mixture of brown sugar, lime, bourbon, soy sauce, garlic, red pepper flakes, Dijon mustard and sesame oil . . . but no salt! The dish was served with the customer's choice of vegetable salad for $4.95.
But enough praise of the poultry. In addition to its daily specials, Morton's prepares tuna and shrimp salads, pasta salads and vegetable salads. One recent potato salad ($4.50 a pound) contained red potatoes with vinaigrette dressing as well as corn, celery, Parmesan cheese and cracked black pepper.
Old fashioned crab cakes and soft shell crabs, which are seasonal, are available Fridays. Morton's also offers a variety of soups; a recent week's menu included New England clam chowder, cream of potato and cold carrot soups.
