Glen Burnie Gophers

Anne Arundel County Girls Soccer At A Glance

September 06, 1991

Head coach: Ed Leibe (first season)

Assistant coaches: Suzie Goetkze and Mike Smith

1990 record: 6-6

Returnees: Seniors Erin Sutton (F), Abby Weldon (MF), Heather Smith (CF) and Jamme Bober (MF); juniors Kelly Rodgers (CHB), Melissa Schaffer (sweeper) and Sheri Denton (stopper); sophomore Valerie Ogle (W-FB)

Newcomer: Carol Brandenburg (MF-def)

Coach's outlook: "I wouldn't say this is a rebuilding year. We're somewhere in between. We have a solid base of returning starters, but it's not like everyone's back. We're shooting to make the first round of the playoffs. I think we're definitely going to improve on last year's record. I think we'll surprise some people. Some teams in the past have looked at Glen Burnie as being pretty easy to beat, but if anyone thinks we're an easy win this year, they'll be surprised. The attitude is great and they're all working very hard."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Another .500 season would be a nice achievement, considering standout goalie Kim Myers has departed for Rutgers University. Even her back-up, Lisa Purkins, has moved on to Anne Arundel Community College. But seven starters return, giving Leibe that "solid base." And the first-year coach's past association with the successful Broadneck program can't hurt.

BROADNECK BRUINS

Head coach: David Lord (fifth season)

Assistant coaches: Lee Wood and Neil Goodrich

1990 record: 9-3, lost to Severna Park, 2-0, in Region III final

Returnees: Seniors Ava Tasker (striker), Dawn Frederick (MF), Michelle Meyer (striker), Holly Mowry (G) and April Quigley (MF); juniors Suzy Goodrich (stopper) and Cheryl Carnes (def); sophomores Katy Kemerer (def), Amy Adams (MF) and Susannah Johnson (def)

Newcomer: Sophomore J.K. Schmidt (MF); freshman Leslie Rogaleski (def)

Coach's outlook: "My team has played together for so long, I thought we'd be further along. But I've had to change things around so much, they're not gelling to where they need to be. The kids are good enough to go along way, but they're not playing well together right now. Physically, we can play with anyone. Quickness-wise, we can play with anyone. But it comes down to the short passing game and trapping if you're going to be better than the quality teams."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Broadneck is, indeed, a quality team -- one that just needs to get healthy while its players adjust to new positions. The talent is there to make another postseason appearance and challenge for a berth in the states, but the going may be slow in the beginning.

SEVERNA PARK FALCONS

Head coach: Joyce Stefancik (13th season)

Assistant coaches: Joe Gorden and Elaine Robertson

1990 record: 16-0, Region III and 4A-3A state champions

Returnees: Seniors Cathi Hanson(striker), Nicki Cecere (CHB), Cindy Miller (def), Sally Montgomery (off), Wendy Snyder (off), Erin Burkhard (def) and Alicia Conine (G);juniors Amy Carnaggio (stopper) and Stephanie Roberts (HB); sophomores Erin Wylde (off), Shelley Seivert (def) and Carrie Budzinski (sweeper)

Newcomers: Junior Kristen Wilson (G); sophomore Janet Rupert (off); freshman Jessica Hines (def).

Coach's outlook: "So far, collectively, I see good, solid talent. I don't see any individual stars, but collectively they're a solid group of kids. The ability is probably there, and with a little bit of luck. . . We scrimmaged some of Howard County's best and came out on top, so I was real pleased. But we have a lot of key positions to rebuild."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Finally, Severna Park looks vulnerable. Graduation the past two years has stripped the program of some marvelous talent. While the Falcons had plenty of "stars" return last year to supplement somekey losses, that's not the case this fall. Even so, this team remains No. 1 until someone proves otherwise.

OLD MILL PATRIOTS

Head coach: Bruce Sponsler (sixth season)

Assistant coaches: Wayne Robinson and Tom Schiltz

1990 record: 11-4, Region II champions, lost to Oakland Mills, 4-2, in 4A-3A state semifinals

Returnees: Seniors Teri Lee (F), Amy Tolley (F), Terri Bogle (HB), Jennifer Bostak (FB), Amy Drapalski (G), Amanda Baker (HB), Alison Baker (HB), Ami Dannunzio (HB), Wendy Schleifer (F) and Vanessa Lincoln (HB); juniors Nickie Matters (FB), Cindy Parulis (FB) and Michelle Smith (FB); sophomores Michelle Salmon (F) and Jackie Bardelli (G)

Newcomers: Juniors Stacey Himes (HB), Lori Lynch (FB), Kim Winbrow (HB), Amy Swanhart (FB),Amanda Swanhart (FB), Ann Marie McNally (F) and Heather Clark (HB); sophomore Lisa Gallicchio (FB)

Coach's outlook: "We do have some talent coming back this year, and now we're hoping that the team can gel together. And they seem to be heading in that direction. This group is capable of beating any team we face. It's just a question of putting it all together on that particular day."
