Raceway fires called arson

September 06, 1991

Fire officials believe an arsonist set four barns ablaze early today at the abandoned Free State Raceway, the second suspected arson at the Laurel track in 10 days.

Deputy state Fire Marshal Bob Thomas said three of the four barns, which have been empty for 18 months, were destroyed while the fourth suffered heavy damage.

He said that investigators believe today's fires are related to a blaze in the track's administrative building in late August. There are no suspects in either incident.

pTC Thomas said 40 firefighters from Prince George's and Howard counties spent about 90 minutes battling the fires before they were extinguished. There were no injuries.

An estimate of damage was not immediately available, Thomas said.
