APSL Coach of the Year, MVP awards go to Bays

September 04, 1991|By Kent Baker

The Maryland Bays posted the best record in the American Professional Soccer League this season, and now they have swept the Coach of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards.

Gary Hindley was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Bays to a 19-2 regular-season record and into the postseason against the Albany Capitals beginning Friday.

Forward Jean Harbor, who topped the APSL in goals (17), assists (11) and total points (45) was chosen MVP, leading a contingent of six Bays named to the all-star team.

"I'll be happier winning the championship," Hindley said yesterday. "That replaces any award you can get. I think everybody here is concerned with team recognition more than anything else."

L But, Hindley added, the choice of Harbor "had to be a lock."

Midfielder Kevin Sloan, the league's No. 2 scorer with 14 goals and 32 points, also was chosen to the first team and defender Chris Reif and forward Brian Haynes made the second unit.

Honorable mention in voting by the league's coaches went to Bays defenders Jeff Agoos and George Gelnovatch.

The Bays broke or tied 11 league records.

They were 3-1 against Albany this year, winning at home, 4-1 and 5-0. In the two-game playoff series, the teams play at each other's home field.

"I think we have fresh legs," said Hindley. "We didn't play this past weekend, so we're somewhat rested. We're about as healthy, as we've been all year."
