Gem shines on final day of race week

SAILING

ANNAPOLIS -- Skipper Mike Ironmonger's Gem, from St. Mary's College, won its third race in three tries yesterday on the final day of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association's annual three-day Annapolis Race Week.

Gem completed its domination of the PHRF A Class on a day when radically shifting winds helped cause some upsets.

Davidsonville sailor Henry Judy was leading the J/35 class on Outrageous after Sunday's races with two first-place finishes, but the yacht was disqualified from yesterday's race after a protest hearing. That enabled Paul Parks' Sundog to finish first overall.

For those sailing nearer to Annapolis on the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake's Fleet 1 windward-leeward course, a dying and shifting breeze caused some upsets and kept things interesting.

"It was a challenge to sail well in those conditions," said CBYRA President Dave Blessing, who was aboard Bruce Bingman's and Taran Teague's J/27 Mischief in PHRF B. "It was crucial to keep the boat driving, which meant you had to eat a header sometimes to get to the wind you wanted. It was fun."

Farther south, on the 12.1-mile windward-leeward course managed by the West River Sailing Club, Fleet 2 sailors fought the added difficulty of heavy powerboat chop, as well as the unpredictable winds.

"The wind was all over the place," said Bob Muller, skipper of Stingray in the MORC class. "We had about 12 knots at the start, but it died off and shifted back and forth. You'd look up ahead and see someone doing really well and head that way, but what was there 10 minutes ago wasn't there by the time you got there."
