North Carroll

Panthers

Coach: Randy Clark, fourth year

Assistant coaches: Jim Boesler, Craig Walker, Greg Knill, Phil Bonnell, Carroll Seiler

Last year's record: 1-9, 0-5 in the Central Maryland Conference

Top returnees: Seniors, running back/defensive back Ronnie Miller, fullback/linebacker Jason Small, split end/defensive back Wade Zufall, tight end/defensive end Dave Polischeck

Top newcomers: Seniors, offensive tackle/defensive back Geoff Baughn, offensive tackle/defensive tackle Shawn Hott, offensive tackle/defensive tackle Frank Shipley, offensive guard/defensive tackle Shannon King

Coach's comments: "The first five games (last season) we lost were by less than a touchdown. You could always find a key mistake. A top priority is to eliminate the keymistakes that kept us from winning. We need some success early to get some positive feedback. If we get that there is no telling what we can do."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook: The Panthers are comingoff a tough 1-9 season a year ago which saw them go without a win inthe CMC. The Panthers have some key players returning at the skilledpositions. Just as important, they have a lot of seniors returning to provide leadership. Clark is looking to run the ball more offensively which means seniors Miller and Small will play a major role in theteam's success. Clark is concerned with his team's lack of size defensively but said the team is quicker than in the past. A key to last year's disappointing season was losing some close ball games early, if they can turn some of those losses into wins -- they could finish around the .500 mark. But as one of the smallest schools in the primarily Class 3A and 4A Central Maryland Conference, they'll have their work cut out for them.
