Walkersville

Lions

Coach: Dave Schrodel, sixth year

Assistant coaches: Mike Wells, Ron Manges, Curt Hughes, Matt Perkins, Jim Abbott, Rick Little, Larry Ponson

Last year's record: 9-1 overall, 8-1 in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League and tied for first

Top returnees: Seniors, running back Brad Friedman, wide receiver Matt Arthur, offensive tackle Tony Beatrice, running back Chad Hildebrand, offensive tackle Matt Watcher, tight end Brian Boone, nose guard Josh Takis

Top newcomers:Juniors, offensive tackle John Fox, guard/linebacker Dennis Weeks, quarterback Dana Schrodel, offensive tackle David Grimes

Coach's comments: "We should be pretty competitive. The defense is the questionmark with only two returning starters. Offensively, we'll mix it up.We'll look to pass the ball using 12- to 15-yard routes. Our goal every season is to make the playoffs and go from there."

The CarrollCounty Sun's outlook: After tying for first a year ago, Walkersvillehas to be considered one of the favorites for the MVAL title. Schrodel has shown concern about a lack of experience on defense, but should have enough talent to again be successful. Look for the offense to mix it up with a strong running game and short pass routes. In a league that looks up for grabs at this point, Walkersville looks as good as anyone to claim the league title. One key will be how the young defense responds. Schrodel has a definite challenge ahead of him in order to remain atop the MVAL.
