Air Conditioner Stolen From Shelter

Someone climbed a ladder and stole an air conditioner from an Annapolis homeless shelter and food pantry, city police reported.

Workers at the Helping Hand Inc., in the unit block of Clay Street, noticedWednesday morning that the air conditioner had been removed from a second-floor rear window, police said.

Police have no suspects.


County police have charged a 34-year-old Odenton man with breaking into a lingerie store in Severn yesterday.

Stuart Edward Bates, 34, of the 500 block of Williamsburg Lane, also was charged with destruction of property and resisting arrest, police said.

At 2 a.m., officers were called to the Lingerie and Gift Center at Severn Square Shopping Center. They found the front glass door broken and the cash register gone.

Minutes later, officers were called to the back of a home in the 1200 block of Richfield Drive. After hearing a loud noise, they found Bates hitting the cash register with a hammer, police said.


A man snatched a 35-year-old woman's purse and threw her to the ground, but dropped the purse when bystanders chased him, Annapolis police said.

The purse-snatching occurred about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday as the woman was walking between Woodward and Peale courts in Painters Hill, police said.

Several bystanders chased the robber, who disappeared into the woods behind Woodward Court, police said. The purse was recovered with nothingmissing.

Police are seeking a thin 20- to 22-year-old black man about 5-feet-9 with a medium complexion.


A Bowie man was charged with possession of cocaine after police found the drug on him yesterday.

David Lee Heinicke, 27, ofthe 1600 block of English Oaks Road, also was charged with resistingarrest and two counts of battery, police said.

At about 12:30 p.m., police said, officers were watching Heinicke's car, which was parked at Crofton Center on Route 3. Heinicke was wanted on charges stemming from a car chase.

When officers began talking to Heinicke, a struggle began.

Police said the officers found a small bag of crack.
