100-plus Vie In 2 Races

Striders

August 28, 1991

More than 100 runners competed last Wednesday in the Howard County Striders' two-mile and six-mile races over a hilly course in Longfellow.

In the shorter distance competition, Paul Hannsen and 12-year-old Dana Strickland led the men's and women's fields with little opposition. Hannsen cruised through the two miles in 10 minutes, 27 seconds, and finished nearly a minute ahead of second-place Bobby Van Allen, who was runner-up in the two-mile race for the second week in a row.

Strickland stayed with some of the race leaders through the firstdownhill mile and later, comfortably ahead, slowed down through the second, uphill mile, finishing in 13:07.

A few minutes after the leaders finished, the great crush of two-mile runners overwhelmed the timer, causing its breakdown and loss of times for the last half of the field.

Gary Anderson once again dominated the six-mile field. His time of 33:50 on the Longfellow course was seven seconds slower than his time for the flat six miles he ran the previous week in Oakland Mills. Second-place Craig Chasse started a minute late but still managed to climb nearly all the way up the field to finish in 36:25. With a time of 46:02, Debbie Kocay won the women's six-mile event by a margin of victory similar to Anderson's.

The Striders will presentawards for their Summer Series at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at Thunder Hill Elementary School.

On Sept. 8, the Striders square off against the Montgomery County Road Runners in the annual Brighton Dam Challenge Race. Interested Howard County runners should call Jim Carbary, 964-8375, for more information.
