This show-stopping cake is actually very easy to make. The recipe is from Crisco Shortening.

Ribbon Layer Cake

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups sugar

3/4 cup shortening

2 teaspoons vanilla

1 cup milk

4 egg whites

Red food coloring

1 10-ounce jar cherry or strawberry jelly

Creamy white frosting, recipe below

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour three 8x8x2-inch baking pans; set aside.

Combine flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.

Place sugar, shortening and vanilla in large mixing bowl. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer until fluffy. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating well.

Wash and dry beaters thoroughly. Beat egg whites in another large bowl until stiff peaks form, tips should stand straight. Fold egg whites gently into batter.

Divide batter into thirds. Color one portion with three or four drops of food coloring to make pink. Color second portion with about eight drops to make dark pink. Leave third portion white. Pour each portion of batter into prepared pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for about 10 minutes. Remove from pans. Cool completely on racks.

Trim edges of cake. Cut each layer in half crosswise to make six layers, each 8x4-inches. Spread five layers with jelly, stack layers, alternating colors. Top with remaining layer. Place on serving plate so layers are vertical.

Reserve about one-half cup creamy white frosting for decorating. Stir about six drops food coloring into remaining frosting, to make it pink. Frost cake with pink frosting. Decorate with remaining white frosting. If you like, use a basket-weave tip in a decorating bag for ribbon and a round tip for dots beside the ribbon as shown in photograph.

Creamy White Frosting

4 cups confectioner's sugar, sift if lumpy

1 cup shortening

3 tablespoons milk

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

Place sugar, shortening, milk and vanilla in medium mixing bowl. Beat at low speed until creamy, adding additional milk if necessary for spreading consistency. Frost sides and tops of three eight-inch layers.
