Candidate pulls out of SWC post field

John Erickson said yesterday he has informed Southwest Conference commissioner Fred Jacoby that he will remain as director of basketball operations for the Big Eight Conference instead of seeking the newly created SWC position of assistant commissioner/director of basketball operations.

That would apparently leave Towson State basketball coach Terry Truax as the primary candidate for the post that will pay between $75,000 and $100,000 a year.

However, Jacoby refused to say anything about the Erickson withdrawal or the possibility that Truax will be hired.

Last Friday night, assistant SWC information director Bob Gennarelli said that members of a five-man SWC advisory committee had labeled Truax and Erickson (former basketball coach at Wisconsin and first general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks) as the two finalists for the new post.

Truax said last night he has "no feel" for the possibility of being offered the job. He said he could not say for sure if he would accept the post if it were offered.

But Truax did say that Jacoby plans to fill the position by Sept. F FTC and that Jacoby would hold a conference call with the advisory board in the next couple of days.

Houston athletic director Rudy Davalos said late last night that his committee was still looking at two other candidates.
