John B. Atkinson Retired colonel

Services for John B. Atkinson, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who operated the Severna Park Garden Center for 10 years, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, Ritchie Highway at Robinson Road in Severna Park.

Mr. Atkinson, who was 69, died Friday of lung cancer at his home in Port Charlotte, Fla.

From 1967 to 1977, Mr. Atkinson owned the garden center in Severna Park, where he lived before selling the business and moving to Florida.

Born and raised in Clarksburg, W.Va., he served in the Army during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired in 1966 after 26 years of service.

Mr. Atkinson was a member of the Amos Masonic Lodge No. 226 and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 117, both in Severna Park. He was a former member of the Severna Park Lion's Club and the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Co.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Eleanor Johnson; two sons, John G. Atkinson of Severna Park and James A. Atkinson of Stevensville; a daughter, Susan C. Vint of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
