Lendl ousts McEnroe, to face Edberg in final

COMMACK, N.Y. -- Ivan Lendl defeated John McEnroe, 7-3, 7-5, yesterday to move into the final against Stefan Edberg at the Hamlet Challenge Cup.

Edberg, ranked second in the world, was in control most of the way, as he beat qualifier Olivier Delaitre of Luxembourg, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Emilio Sanchez defeated friend and fellow Spaniard Francisco Clavet, 7-5, 6-1, in the semifinals and will meet Wimbledon champion Michael Stich of Germany in today's final.

Stich had 11 aces in overpowering Horst Skoff, 7-5, 6-1, in the other semifinal.

In the women's draw, Brenda Schultz of the Netherlands outlasted Nicole Provis of Australia, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, to advance to the final. She will meet Alexia Dechaume of France, who defeated Marianne Werdel of Bakersfield, Calif., 6-1, 6-3.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Unseeded Sandy Mayer eliminated top-seeded John Lloyd, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to advance to the final.

No. 2 seed Hank Pfister needed 51 minutes to oust Jamie Fillol of Chile, 6-1, 6-2. Pfister and Mayer will meet today for the title in the third of nine stops on the Grand Champions tour for players

35 and over.
