* Astros P Jim Deshaies recently got together for lunch with Hal Smith, the man Deshaies claims is the most famous person from his hometown of Massena, N.Y. If the name only sounds vaguely familiar, Smith was the actor who played Otis Campbell, the town drunk, in the "Andy Griffith Show."

* Dodgers OF Brett Butler is second in the NL in hits with 145. More than a third of them (52) have been infield hits, including 19 bunt singles.

* Orioles DH Sam Horn was one of the major-league leaders in homer-to-at-bat ratio at the All-Star break, averaging a home run every 12.8 at-bats. But he has 2 homers since July 6 and his ratio has dropped to a home run every 16 at-bats. He doesn't even lead the team anymore. Chito Martinez averages a homer every 14 at-bats, and Glenn Davis has a homer every 11 at-bats in very limited action.

* The Phillies have won 15 consecutive games at Veterans Stadium, the second-longest home winning streak in club history. The record is 16, set in 1974.

* It has been a painful season for the Rangers, who have used the disabled list 23 times and recently surpassed 1,000 player-days lost to injury. The previous club record was 725 days, set in 1989.
