Thelma C. Sawyer

Thelma Caldwell Sawyer, who served as the nurse in her husband's medical office for many years, died Saturday of cancer at her home in the Hampton House Apartments in Towson.

Private services for Mrs. Sawyer, who was 85, are planned.

Mrs. Sawyer had worked with her husband, Dr. George J. Sawyer Jr., for many years before his retirement from the general practice of medicine in Hamilton in 1976.

The former Thelma Caldwell was a native of Marietta, Ohio, who came to Baltimore to attend the University of Maryland nursing school, from which she graduated in 1933. She and her husband lived in Islip, N.Y., for a time in the mid-1930s.

Mrs. Sawyer was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Besides her husband of 58 years, her survivors include two sons, George J. Sawyer III of Charlotte, N.C., and Robert C. Sawyer of Santa Monica, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Caldwell of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Robert Caldwell, also of St. Petersburg; and five grandchildren.
