Quick pace in market run erases doubts

August 20, 1991|By Michael Reeb

Doug Mock had doubts going into Sunday's To Market to Market 5-miler about how well he would run. His 24-minute, 29-second, first-place finish, a personal record for Mock, answered those doubts.

"I was wondering about the condition I was in," said Mock, whose previous personal record was 24:35 at the White Rose 5-miler in 1989. "I ran the Bel Air Town Run [5K in June] in 14:35. I haven't run a sub five-minute pace since then."

Mock not only ran a sub 5-minute pace in To Market to Market, he beat second-place finisher Dave Berardi, who led for the first 1 1/2 miles, by almost a half-minute.

"It [running alone] was really starting to get to me at the end," Mock, 24, of Salisbury said. "I thought, 'Oh, well, Dave'll be here in awhile.' "

Berardi, 33, of Catonsville finished in 24:56. Maureen Hall, 26, of Parkville won the female division in 29:48. William Desmond, the 11th finisher overall at 26:39, won his first race as a master. Johnathan Francis (218th place, 37:22), 11, was the youngest finisher.

To Market to Market, the Society for the Preservation of Fells Point and Federal Hill's one-day celebration of the two communities, was a success in more ways than one. The race not only went off without a hitch; it also drew a better-than-average field and a favorable review.

"It's nice and it's flat," Mock said.

"You didn't really hit the cobblestones," Berardi said about that bane of runners that seems to be a factor in any race through zTC Fells Point. "The only bad part was all the turns."
