Padres' Roberts set for surgery

August 19, 1991

San Diego Padres outfielder Bip Roberts will undergo arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn cartilage in his left knee. The club placed Roberts on the 15-day disabled list yesterday.

Roberts was injured in a rundown during the first inning of Friday night's game with the Atlanta Braves. During his past 22 games, he has batted at a .360 pace (31-for-86) to put his season mark at .286.

Club doctors declined to predict how long Roberts will be sidelined until after they perform the procedure. The surgery will repair a torn lateral meniscus, a cartilage outside the knee.

To fill Roberts' spot on the roster, the Padres recalled infielder Paul Faries from the Class AAA Las Vegas Stars. Faries played 38 games with the Padres earlier this season with a .165 batting average.

* ROYALS: George Brett's fourth-inning single yesterday gave him 4,511 total bases, tying him with Mickey Mantle for 22nd place on the career list.

Brett doubled Saturday for his 1,005th career extra-base hit to move past Honus Wagner into 18th place on the all-time list. It was also Brett's 2,800th hit.

* CUBS: Rick Sutcliffe experienced some stiffness after his winning performance Friday but said it is normal and is scheduled to pitch Wednesday in Montreal.
