Here are summaries of some recent Computing product reviews. Each product is rated on a scale of one to four, with one computer indicating poor and four indicating excellent:

Mathcad 3.0, for PC or compatible running Windows 3.0. $495. From Mathsoft Inc., 201 Broadway, Cambridge, Mass. 02139. (617) 577-1017.

LabVIEW 2, for any Macintosh with at least 3MB of free hard disk space and 3.5MB of RAM. $1,995. From National Instruments Corp., 6504 Bridge Point Parkway, Austin, Texas 78730-5039. (800) 433-3488 or (512) 794-0100.

Mathcad 3.0 is an equation-solving program for PCs running Windows. You type an equation in its window, and Mathcad pops out the solution, graphs the results and asks for more. It can handle symbolic equations in algebra and calculus.

LabVIEW 2 lets you build "virtual instruments" and "virtual front panels" on a Mac or PC screen to collect, analyze, control and present data from laboratory equipment.

FastZip Invoice/Statement and FastZip Mail

If you mail enough statements, FastZip Mail will pay for itself in no time. The invoice/statement part of this two-disk program also will handle window envelopes, postcards and labels and print bar codes.

Installing these two programs is pretty simple. The set-up program asks you for your business name and address and even attaches little messages to your customers, both on the statements and on the envelopes.

If you have regular customers, you can enter their names and addresses through your data base. Otherwise, you enter the mailing address manually. You tell it what your sales tax rate is (be sure to enter it in decimal points, such as .06 for 6 percent), and it will total up the order, including discounts and amount already paid.

After evaluating the programs (look for Version 2.2 on bulletin boards, or we'll send you copies of both disks for $7), registration for each program costs $49 from Westcoast Software, 976 W. Foothill, No. 344, Claremont, Calif. 91711.

(For trial copies of FastZip Mail and FastZip Invoice, send $7 to Shareware, P.O. Box 7037, Long Beach, Calif. 90807. Or call (213) 595-6870. Please indicate 5 1/4 - or 3 1/2 -inch disks.)
