* Yankees 2B Steve Sax needs 2 more stolen bases to move into a tie for 20th place on the club's all-time list with 107. The 20th spot is occupied by Babe Ruth, who was a little faster than he looked.

* Padres P Bruce Hurst has made 24 starts this year. He has pitched into the sixth inning in all of them.

* Tigers 1B Cecil Fielder had 34 home runs and 98 RBI after 114 games this year. He had 35 home runs and 90 RBI after the same number last year. He is beginning to look like a solid bet to become the first player to lead the AL in homers and RBI over consecutive seasons since Jimmie Foxx in 1932-33.

* When Padres 1B Fred McGriff hit grand slams in consecutive games last week, it was the first time an NL player had done so since Phil Garner hit slams on Sept. 14 and 15, 1978, for the Astros. Rob Deer has done it in the AL since then.

* The Cubs are on pace to set a team record for fewest errors in a season. After Thursday's game, they had 76 in 114 games, which projects to 109 for the season. The club record, set in 1983, is 115.

* The Twins were 21 games over .500 after Friday night. The last season in which they were that many games above sea level

was 1970, when they finished 98-64.
