Sutherland, Harford educator

Services for retired Harford County school principal Hunter C. Sutherland will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Little Falls Friends Meeting in Fallston.

Mr. Sutherland, who was 80, died of heart disease Friday at Fallston General Hospital.

He retired in 1976, after 30 years as a teacher, principal and supervisor in Harford County public schools.

Mr. Sutherland was born in Dickenson County, Va. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Berea College in Kentucky and a master's in education from the Johns Hopkins University. He did graduate work at the University of Maryland and the University of Kentucky.

He was a clerk and a member of several committees at Little Falls Friends Meeting. He belonged to the Friends of Jerusalem Mill and was active in the Harford County Historical Society. He enjoyed gardening.

He married his second wife, Ruth L. Gross Sutherland of Fallston, after the death of his first wife, the former Pauline Derthick.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janet L. Johnston of Westfield, N.J.; a son, Alan B. Sutherland of Davison, Mich.; two grandsons, Scott A. Johnston of New York City and Mark L. Johnston of Detroit; a brother, Claude S. Sutherland of Oakton, Va.; and two sisters, Virginia Adkins of Portsmouth, Va., and Ella Holyfield of Cumberland, Va.
