SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- A three-horse entry trained by Jonathan Sheppard filled the top three slots in the $118,200 New York Turf Writers Cup at Saratoga Race Course yesterday.

Yaw defeated Moonstruck by two lengths in the 2 3/8 -miles steeplechase run over a soft course. When Double Bill finished another 17 lengths back in third, a monopoly on all win-place-show payoffs was completed: $5, $3.80 and $3.60.

Early leader Victorian Hill, the top-weighted favorite, held on to finish fourth and complete a $11.80 exacta.

Yaw, ridden by Jonathan Smart, took the lead after the 10th of 12 fences, and his stablemates quickly followed his sudden surge.
