Detroit Tigers -- Purchased the contract of P Jeff Kaiser from Class AAA Toledo. Optioned 3B Scott Livingstone (.333 in 63 AB) to Toledo.

Milwaukee Brewers -- Announced that P Teddy Higuera, on the DL with a torn rotator cuff, will undergo arthroscopic surgery Aug. 23.

Minnesota Twins -- Signed 2B Matthew Lawton.

Oakland Athletics -- Released P Andy Hawkins. Recalled P Joe Slusarski from Class AAA Tacoma.

San Francisco Giants -- Signed free-agent 2B Tommy Herr (.194 with 1 HR and 14 RBI in 70 games for the New York Mets). Placed IF Greg Litton on the 15-day DL.

Toronto Blue Jays -- OF Cory Snyder (.111 in 35 AB for Toronto), designated for assignment last week when the club acquired Candy Maldonado from the Milwaukee Brewers, has agreed to join Class AAA Syracuse.

New Jersey Nets -- Waived 2-time All-Star G Reggie Theus (18.6 ppg, 4.7 apg) so the 13-year NBA veteran can play for Associazione Pallacanestro Varese of the Italian League.
