Once again, the thoughts of hundreds of county high school students have turned from trying to figure out how to beat the heat to thinking about how to beat out another student for a spot on a varsity sports team.
Yesterday marked the beginning of tryouts and practice forpublic high school football, boys and girls soccer, volleyball, cross country, field hockey and golf teams.
Gridiron action officially will kick off the fall sports scheduleon Aug. 31, when Severn School plays host to Bishop Walsh for a 2 p.m. meeting, while county public schools will begin regular-season action the first weekend of September.
The remaining sports will get under way the beginning of the second week of the school year. The first day of classes for all public schools is Sept. 3.
