Haversack Wins Feature In Westminster Bike Race

WESTMINSTER — Midway through the feature event at the Great Westminster Bike Race on Sunday, three riders pulled away from the pack and then built a lead over the last five miles of the event.

When the dust cleared inthe Masters 35-44 race, Scott Haversack took the first-place prize of $155 on the 20-mile criterium race, Steven Lewis was second and David Hawes was third.

Jim Montgomery and Bobby Phillips, riders familiar to those who closely followed the event in its early years, were back in the pack -- Montgomery took fifth and Phillips eighth.

In all, nine races were contested at a variety of skill levels and drew competitive ridersfrom as far away as New Mexico, Florida, Texas and New Jersey. It was the eighth running of the event, which started in 1981 but was not contested for three years, 1987 to 1989.

The event was co-sponsored by the Westminster Jaycees and the Chesapeake Wheelmen and was contested on a one-mile course on the west side of town.

* Women (12 miles): 1. Karen Menge, 2. Pat Kopf, 3. Lorie Struzik-Eppert, 4. Jennifer Ramelmeier, 5. Barbara Haney, 6. Beth Hulleberg, 7. Linda Mack, 8. Sarah Richards.

* Senior Men's Category IV (15 miles): 1. Steve Lewis, 2. Bill Ludwig, 3. Robin Collins, 4. Dave MacIntosh, 5. Bryan Menzies.

* Senior Men's Category 2/3 (20 miles): 1.Rick Norton, 2. Ken Anderson, 3. Niona Ebrahimnajad, 4. Tim Rupp, 5.Russel Weber, 6. Michael Seargler, 7. Jim Startt, 8. Kevin Szot, 9. Tom Stewart, 10. Carl Westergren.
