Severna Park Softball Loses Coach Yannuzzi

August 14, 1991

Paul Yannuzzi, the Severna Park softball coach for the last six years, including a 1987 state championship season, has transferred to Arundel High School in Gambrills.

He has taken over as science department head at Arundel from Frank Drazen, who is moving to Severna Parkas an administrator.

"I leave Severna Park with regret, but I wanted to be a department head and took the opportunity," said Yannuzzi. "I have a lot of respect for Mr. (Oliver) Wittig, (Severna Park principal) and Andy (Borland, athletic director) and will miss them and the kids.

"Severna Park is a great place to teach and coach, and I finally had a young pitcher to keep us strong for a long time, but I guess, you could say I've hung it up for now."

Yannuzzi was referring to his freshman phenom Jen Spampinato, who was All-County Second Team by The Anne Arundel County Sun this past season.

"I'll miss coaching softball, andI just might get back into umpiring again," said Yannuzzi, who is not ruling out coaching softball again.

"I went from umpiring to coaching, and I don't think I made any enemies among the umpires, and they will have me back."

Arundel's softball coach is Don Banks, and if he ever decided to step down, Yannuzzi said he would be interestedin the Wildcats' position.

"I've always believed that you should coach in the school where you teach. There should be a loyalty to thekids you coach," said Yannuzzi.
