Phone fee

It's your call

August 14, 1991

New technology has made a wide-spread telephone system for the deaf a possibility. The system would allow deaf users to communicate with hearing people who do not have special phones. The system would be paid for in part by a 45-cent surcharge on the bills of all phone users. There have been complaints about the surcharge, which has been approved by the state.

The Evening Sun wnats to know what do you think. Should all phone users join in helping to pay for a vastly improved phone system for the deaf, or not?

The call is local and must be made from a tone phone. The SUNDIAL number is 783-1800 or, in Anne Arundel County, 268-7736. When you reach SUNDIAL, enter category 4600 and wait for instructions from the announcer. Call with your opinion between 10 a.m. and midnight. The results will be published in this section tomorrow.

"It's Your Call" represents a sampling of opinions from certain segments of the community, but it is not balanced demographically, as a scientific public opinion poll would be.
