Man shot to death near Inner Harbor

August 14, 1991

A 23-year-old Baltimore man was shot and killed early this morning near the border of Little Italy and the Inner Harbor.

Sheltry Holmes of the 800 block of East Pratt Street was shot once in the back a few minutes after midnight in a parking lot at Pratt and President streets used by customers of Little Italy restaurants, police said.

Mr. Holmes had been with another man in the area when they were chased by two or three other people, city police Detective Donald Waltemayer said. Shots were exchanged and Mr. Holmes was hit once in the back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found a .32-caliber revolver near the body but could not say to whom the gun belonged.

The shooting occurred just outside the headquarters of Republican mayoral candidate Joseph Scalia, who said he and others were inside the campaign headquarters when they saw flashing light. They went outside and saw the victim staggering across the parking lot, he said.

Police took one man in custody for questioning. No motive had been determined.
