Gregory P. Pekala has been promoted to manager in the Automotive Dealership Division of Walpert, Smullian & Blumenthal P.A.

* Steven R. Jozwiak, CPA, has been promoted to manager in the Audit and Accounting Department at Coyne & McClean. He specializes in servicing the construction, wholesale and service industries.

* Terry Grant, CPA, has been promoted to the in-charge level at Katz, Abosch, Windesheim, Gershman & Freedman P.A. Grant specializes in services to the construction industry as well as tax-related issues regarding employees and sub-contractors. Sister Jean Rhoads and Mark W. Pahl have been appointed service line administrators at St. Agnes Hospital. The positions were created to provide total administrative responsibility for a designated service area. Rhoads is responsible for the oncology service line and Pahl is responsible for the cardiology service line. George S. Barrett has been named president of Barre-National Inc., a Baltimore-based liquid pharmaceutical subsidiary. Barre-National is a subsidiary of A.L. Laboratories Inc., a specialty pharmaceuticals manufacturer based in Fort Lee, N.J. Barrett is president of NMC Laboratories, A.L. Laboratories' creams and ointments subsidiary. He will continue to hold that position.

Financial services:

Signet Bank of Maryland has announced several promotions. The following people are new bank officers: Robin E. Brooks, commercial financial division; Cathleen Hersl, Signet Insurance Services Inc.; Nicole I. Maxwell, Signet Insurance Services; Donna Lynn Meros, loan administration division; Ronald M. Teller Jr., branch administration division; Debra C. Davis, insurance services division; Daniel D. Bohrer Jr, audit division; Christine G. Neary, retail banking division; Gary Pinder, retail banking division.

The following people were named vice president: Jeffrey R. Dunn, commercial real estate financing division; Margaret J. Moulton, trust and financial services division; and Carol R.A. Taylor, loan administration division.

The bank named Louis Sergi a vice president in the trust and financial services division, where he is to serve as regional manager for institutional trust in Maryland, Washington and Northern Virginia. Sergi has 21 years' experience in employee benefit trust administration.


Nancy R. Beall has joined Hottman Edwards Advertising Inc. and Connie M. Joslyn was named public relations account executive at the full service advertising and marketing agency based in Baltimore. Beall had been administrative assistant to the president at F.E. Worthington Inc., a Baltimore-based graphic design and consulting firm. Joslyn is a recent graduate of Towson State University who has experience in copywriting, sales and public relations.

* Mimi Azoubel as been appointed to media planner and buyer for Cornerstone, a Baltimore-based advertising firm. Azoubel formerly researched and developed media plans and market analysis for Gray, Kirk & Evans.


Timothy O'Shields was appointed deputy director of EA Laboratories, a division of EA Engineering, Science and Technology Inc., of Sparks. The new position was created to accommodate the company's recent expansion. O'Shields had been a manager with an environmental testing laboratory.


Baltimore Life Insurance Co. has appointed John A. Ropka assistant manager of the Baltimore District of the company. Ropka has five years of insurance experience in sales and management. The company also announced that William R. Cline, administrative coordinator for special markets, has earned the designations of Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant, which are awarded by the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Jarrett O. Powell, a member of the Baltimore district of the company, was recently honored at the company's production convention held at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Qualifications for the convention were based on production for the entire year.
