Cuts in government programs, including the loss of some work on Trident submarines, contributed to a decline in revenues and a second quarter of red ink for this Columbia-based government contractor.

Essex, a 200-worker professional services contractor, said that it lost $252,000 in the second quarter of this year, a slight improvement over the $263,000 loss in the same period last year. But sales for the period were nearly a third lower than last year's $6.4 million..
