STRATTON MOUNTAIN, Vt. -- Newcomer Melissa McNamara proved to be the coolest in a final threesome with two veterans yesterday and won her first LPGA event at the Stratton Mountain Classic.
McNamara, playing in the last group for the first time ever with Patty Sheehan and Deb Richard, posted a 70 for a 10-under 278 and a two-stroke win over Sheehan.
McNamara, 25, won $67,500, more than double her total amount in two seasons on tour.
Sheehan, one of the tour's top players, was unable to keep up on the back nine despite shooting a 72.
Richard, a winner last week at the Phar-Mor in Youngstown and one of the LPGA's hottest players, started the round two back of McNamara and Sheehan, and never pulled even with them. Richard also had a 72 for 282, tied with Pat Bradley and Elaine Crosby.
