STRATTON MOUNTAIN, Vt. -- Laura Baugh, seeking her first victory in 17 years on the LPGA tour before she leaves to have her fourth child, tied for the first-round lead yesterday in the $450,000 Stratton Mountain Classic.
Baugh and last week's winner, Deb Richard, matched strokes in the same threesome for 4-under-par 68s, and Rosie Jones came in moments later with the same score.
All three thought they could have done better under the sun on the 6,219-yard course that played much tougher in the rain last year.
Baugh, putting herself into birdie position all day with an accurate 6-iron, sank a 30-35 footer on her second hole and followed with other birdie putts of 4, 15, 8, 4 and 10 feet. But she missed five other putts from eight feet and a two-footer, and a putt from 15 feet went in and out.
"It could have been real scary," she said.
Richard, on her best roll in six years on the tour with two victories and $317,655 in earnings, also felt she "left a lot of birdies out there."
"I think there's some low numbers out on the golf course," she said.
